ABOUT JAGRUTI

The Menstrual Hygiene Management

One of the natural primary aspects of woman’s health is related to - the monthly Menstrual periods – Unfortunately, our woman folk undergoes a lot of suffering during this cycle. It is very ironical that rarely it is discussed as the precursor to the procreation that is determinant to the existence of mankind. Reproduction is the greatest gift from mother nature to every woman. This menstrual cycle / period which is a biological factor hold higher importance in the lives of human beings. Lack of awareness as well as orthodox traditions in society forced women to accept this as a matter of impurity. Women and adolescent girls having this period normally used dirty cloth which again leads to various health disorders. Women and girls suffering from such periods have been forced to stay away from household work and all forms of worshiping the deities.

The rural women experience lots of pain, various levels of discomfort and embarrassment during this time. Even in this age when education has crossed many boundaries, most of the families treat the monthly periods as a taboo and the body impure. Hence the challenges faced by an adolescent girl are manifold. This needs to be addressed by each and every right-thinking individuals and institutions.

THE RED DOT CAMPAIGN: SOLUTION TO SANITARY WASTE MANAGEMENT

There are around 121 Million women in the country who use pads during their menstrual cycle every month. In a year, the disposal of over 12.3 billion sanitary napkins is a big issue. The plastic used in such napkins are not bio-degradable and hence are definitely creating health and environment hazards.

Therefore, to build an Eco-healthy society, Jagruti Foundation has started a mass activity namely, Red Dot Campaign. The Campaign involves promoting following aspects:

  1. Proper disposal of sanitary napkins using news paper to wrap the used sanitary pad by putting a red dot on one side as an indicator.
  2. Adding one more category, Sanitary waste to the existing model of garbage separation at household level, i.e., Dry Garbage and Wet Garbage.
  3. Helping the garbage collectors to handle the waste with ease and hygienically.
  4. Keeping the surroundings clean and healthy.
  5. Encouraging the participation of individual women as well as in groups in red dot campaign
  6. Discussing the use of biodegradable napkins and related issues.
